Bambi 2 rabbit thumper4/16/2024 Tyrus Wong's background designs were revolutionary since their detail was concentrated at the centre of the paintings rather than the periphery, leading the audience to always gravitate towards the spot where the characters would be positioned. The film is notable for being the first Disney film to utilise oils rather than watercolours for its background paintings. But in spite of everything, we keep watching it, and it still has much to offer.įor starters, the visuals of Bambi are magnificent. it is all-too-often dismissed as a reeking pile of schmaltzy, sentimental claptrap. It's a film which foreshadows several of the problems that future Disney films would develop, and like Spielberg's E.T. Disney has a proud history of it, and there is perhaps no more illuminating example than Bambi, a film which embodies both this uncomfortable mismatch and Disney's reputation for softening the edges of its source material. This is not a problem in his better, more popcorn efforts like Jurassic Park and E.T., which embrace sentimentality as a key part of the story and character development.īut Spielberg is by no means the only filmmaker or brand which you could accuse of jarring emotional mismatches. One of the criticisms I've often made of Steven Spielberg is that, in his 'serious' films like Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, there is a jarring mismatch between the portentous, dark tone of the subject matter and his attempts to win over a wide audience through needless sentimentality. It's irreplaceable and heartwarming and one of Walt Disney's greatest classic films. This is what truly makes Bambi the enduring and inspiring film that it is. It also reminds audiences to take pleasure in the small, beautiful things in life, and that every day in life is a new journey, a new adventure. The way that Bambi's progression through life is presented is comparable to the life of anybody in our world, which makes it a very emotional, personable journey. More obvious, anti-hunting and pro-nature themes exist, as well as more personal, subtle themes about humanity and the beauty of life. The most important aspect that makes Bambi a classic film is the themes presented throughout. It adds a lot to the quality of the movie and is very creative. Examples include violins and light string instruments during a rainstorm and a cymbal during a lightning storm. Instead, instrumental elements are implemented brilliantly during several of the scenes of the film. Very little actual sound is used during the movie, aside from the noises created by the main characters. they are all elegantly crafted and beautiful, constantly providing visual treats throughout the film.Īnother thing I love in Bambi is the way the soundtrack is utilized throughout. The environmental art in the film is also spectacular: every bit of scenery, every blade of grass, every leaf, every rain drop, every snowflake. This makes these characters much more than just forest animals, turning them into relatable personalities parallel in many cases to ourselves. In the characters, little details are added to their facial expressions, movements, and actions to convey a sense of emotion and humanity. The character animations as well as the environmental design in this film are both masterfully and artfully created. The first, most obvious aspect is its animation. There are several important aspects of Bambi that makes it the masterpiece that it is. To this day it remains a moving, emotional, and unparalleled film, unique in its aspirations and smart in its execution. Bambi is one of the oldest and most classic animated films to come from Walt Disney.
